This week saw students taught by HART team member Dr. Adam Evans present an exhibition of images associated with the gendering of sports bodies. The images were selected or produced by third year BSc (hons) Sport Development and Coaching students sitting the Sociological Issues in Sports Development module as part of their course.
Tasked with producing an image that represented how gendered bodies are portrayed in sports culture, pairs of students produced an image and an abstract to summarise their image. These were then presented at a University of Lincoln Open day in the Human Performance Centre to prospective students and their parents, who voted for the image they felt was most evocative of gender in sport.
The winning image (shown above) was produced by Amy Womersley and Jennifer Arroud, who drew their pictures from scratch to show how physical, personality and sport-specific characteristics can be associated with masculinity or femininity. A number of other images from the exhibition are presented below.
